What is Permaculture?

“Permaculture design is the dynamic synthesis of natural systems and human ingenuity resulting in a regenerative stewardship of land in service to life in all its forms. Permaculture is a term coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren meaning “permanent agriculture” and refers to the conscious design and maintenance of productive human systems. Modeled on the stability, resilience and diversity of natural ecosystems, permaculture is the integration of people with the land — providing food, shelter, energy, material and non-material needs in a way that is restorative and sustainable.

“When we remember our original instructions as humans — to be integral players in a vibrant and healthy ecological community — we can move past an operating model of scarcity and struggle, into a new realm of abundance and full connection with the natural world. Permaculture offers an elegantly simple and variously adaptable system which utilizes the harmonious and infinitely complex structure of nature to provide solutions for securing a sustainable future for our planet.” — Molly Myerson, Permaculture Marin member
