A new format to our monthly meetings is evolving! Let’s get together on a monthly basis to talk about permaculture or watch a permaculture-related video, and make connections within the community. We can also invite speakers to talk on a specific topic that’s of interest. Let’s make this a community creation. What would you like to learn about or share?
This meeting is open to non-members as well. Email Kathleen at kclanphier@gmail.com to express your interests and let her know if you would like to attend.
Last year in Sonoma County, Daily Acts spearheaded a garden challenge that resulted in 628 garden actions taking place on a single weekend! This year the garden challenge is going national, and here in Marin the goal is to create 100 gardens in every city in Marin County during the week of May 14 – 21. The local challenge is being organized by Susan Miller, and you can visit the website here: http://www.maringardenchallenge.org/index.html
Join Susan for a planning meeting on March 21st. And read her blog post about the garden challenge here: http://maringardenmatchmaker.org/2011/03/16/350-org-the-garden-challenge/

Join filmmaker Miguel Elliot for the premier of his film Earth Building. Adobe is Alive! at the Fairfax Theater.
The movie demonstrates the many advantages of earthen construction, such as helping to build community (CobUnity), using local available resources, and enjoying the often playful process.
Some basic instruction is included on how to build an earthen dome, such as the one behind the Crystal Chalice in Fairfax, benches, such as the bench outside Lydia’s Organics, and ovens, such as the oven at San Domenico School. The film celebrates the possibility of incorporating natural building into the school curriculum, giving children the opportunity to construct something functional for their school using their bare hands and feet.

Prepare to be inspired, educated and entertained! Following the film, we will be doing a tour of the cob projects in Fairfax, starting with the dome behind the Crystal Chalice, the tree in the Circle Center, and the benches inside of Lydia’s Kitchen.
For more information, visit filmmaker Miguel Elliott’s website, Living Earth Structures.

Sustainable Fairfax and Permaculture Marin will be demonstrating sheet mulching techniques, and then we will all get to work sheet mulching the Fairfax Town Hall lawn to transform it into a soil-building, water harvesting site, to eventually become a beautiful, drought tolerant garden.
Participants will earn PACE Day credits towards hosting a PACE Day at their own home or site.

Come learn how rainwater harvesting can be used to decrease and supplement landscape water requirements, buffer stormwater impacts, and provide an emergency water supply. This participatory workshop includes discussion of rainwater harvesting components, design, and technology options using the Sustainability Center as a model, as well as hands-on site assessment activities and the installation of a rain garden at Fairfax Town Hall. Participants will leave with practical experience and resources to assess site-specific rainwater harvesting opportunities and design, install, and maintain a multi-functional rainwater harvesting system.
